Summary

ADD VIOLENCE is an EP by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. It was released digitally on July 19, 2017, two days ahead of its scheduled release date, under Trent Reznor’s label The Null Corporation. It will be followed by the release of a physical component the week of August 8 and a CD release on September 1. A vinyl release was also announced with no release date set. This marks the second EP in a proposed trilogy following the 2016 release of Not the Actual Events.

The album was officially announced on July 13, 2017, and the lead single LESS THAN” and an accompanying music video directed by Brook Linder were released online. On July 18, “THIS ISN’T THE PLACE” was released with an accompanying music video directed by Alex Lieu.

In contrast to their last EP, Not the Actual Events, ADD VIOLENCE is a more accessible EP, with the first track “LESS THAN” being one of those songs that may very well fit into the hit-song category. The following songs are getting darker and appear to manifest themselves in an uncomfortable feeling as if something is not in place and like something terrible is about to happen, or has already happened.

REMEMBER WHEN RECORDS HAD BACK COVERS? NO? MAYBE THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT.

The cover reminds one of a control panel of an old synthesizer or a military device, which bring us back to Year Zero that was released on April 17, 2007. Analyzing the back cover art for ADD VIOLENCE EP and listening closely to the lyrics of the songs, it seems that the EP might have a connection to this album. Fans over the internet are already speculating heavily about its connection with Year Zero. It adds an extra dimension to the entire presentation and overall experience of the album.

Beautifully Destructive

ADD VIOLENCE is a beautifully destructive EP full of newfound energy and excitement that requires a number of listenings to be fully appreciated and understood. It certainly is not for everyone, as some may have mixed feelings about the direction of the band. Personally, I think it’s a great concept, there are layers of hidden stuff between the grooves that I have yet to dig out and decode that will certainly change my review over time.
